One of the big questions for those heading to this oceanic country is the steps to take to work in Australia. The most confusing part is getting the Tax File Number (TFN).
This is a crucial legal document for anyone who wants to work in Australia. The Tax File Number (TFN) is a primary requirement for both Australians and those who want to start their working life there.
To put it simply, the TFN is similar to the Social Security number in the United States, for example, or any number that proves a person is fully capable of working legally.
To ease your worries and clear your thoughts, we bring you all the information you need to get your Australian work permit. Read on!
What is the Tax File Number (TFN) for?
It will help show that you are working in Australia legally and regularly. Any company and any job you apply for in Australia will require you to present the Tax File Number (TFN) documentation. As we’ve said, it’s mandatory to have it for your contract to be legal.
Moreover, the Tax File Number (TFN) will allow you to do your Tax Return without any issues. The Tax Return is the tax declaration in Australia, mandatory for anyone who has been working there. This must be done between July 1 and October 31 through the Australian Taxation Office website.
For most students, the refund will be full since the minimum is set at AUD 18,200*, and most students don’t earn that much in a fiscal year.
Additionally, this number lets you contribute to your Superannuation, the pension fund in Australia. Once you leave the country, this money can come back to you.

How to get the Tax File Number to work in Australia?
The main requirement to apply for the TFN is to have a visa that allows you to work. That means a work visa, a Work and Holiday visa, or even better, a student visa! The study permit lets you get part-time jobs while you study and have fun like never before.
How do I apply for my Tax File Number (TFN)?
Now that we know what the Tax File Number (TFN) is, let’s get to it. The Australian government has provided two ways to apply for it: online or directly at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Let’s go!
Online
- First, go to the Australian Taxation Office website and look for the Tax File Number (TFN) application link.
- Select the “Foreign passport holders” button and “apply online for a TFN.”
- A page with information and requirements for the Tax File Number (TFN) application will appear. Click “start”.
- Fill out a form with your passport information.
- Enter your Australian address as a tax resident (anyone living in the country for more than six months).
- Complete a questionnaire, and within 28 days, you will receive your new and wonderful Tax File Number (TFN) by mail.
If you prefer face-to-face contact or have trouble accessing a computer with the internet, you can also do it in person.
In Office
- First, find the nearest Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
- You might be referred to an agent who will ask for the same information as the online form. However, you’ll likely be directed to the computers in the office and given a phone number to call.
- Follow the instructions given by the recording and provide your personal information.
Once everything is done, a request will be generated, and within 28 days, your Tax File Number (TFN) should arrive at your door.
If, by chance, you do not receive your Tax File Number (TFN), which can happen, we recommend calling (+61) 13 28 61. They will ask for a 13-digit reference number and some personal details.

Benefits of working with a Tax File Number (TFN)
First, it is the safest and most recommended way if you don’t want to work illegally in Australia. Besides, it costs you nothing (just a bit of your time), and you gain a lot.
When working for an employer, they must keep track of your working hours and the tax withheld from your pay. You don’t need to make invoices; your employer must send you the payslips.
The first AUD 18,200* is tax-free. So, if your visa was a student visa and you earned less than that amount, which is usually the case, all the tax withheld will be refunded to you.
