If you want to study in Barcelona, the first step is to enroll in a school or university that is certified. This is because to obtain certain papers, you have to prove enrollment at a certified institution. Also, you need a valid and current passport.

In case your country is exempt, you can live in Spain for a period of 90 days without the need for a visa. Otherwise, you must obtain a visa to study in Barcelona. Visas for working and studying in Barcelona

If your country is not exempt, you’ll have to apply for a visa for studying in Barcelona. Depending on the duration of the course, you can apply for a tourist or student visa. But let’s review each one so that you can choose the one that suits you best.

Tourist Visa

The tourist visa or Schengen visa is a visa with a duration of 3 months. As the name implies, it allows you to stay in Barcelona or in other cities in Spain. In addition, it authorizes you to study while the visa is valid.

Also, while in Spain, you can apply for a student visa! As long as you do it while your tourist visa has not expired. In that case, you must leave the country and complete the procedure from the corresponding embassy or consulate.

Student Visa

If your course lasts more than 3 months, you’ll need a student visa! This permit is more flexible since it allows you to study in Barcelona for 6 months. However, there is a visa with a duration of 1 year.

But don’t worry if your course lasts longer than that. Because you can request a valid extension during the entire study period. Simply do it 2 months before your visa expires.
Also, as soon as you arrive in Barcelona, apply for a foreign student card! This should be done in case your course lasts more than 6 months. Since this document is, a temporary residence permit, so to speak.

Non-profit visa

The non-profit visa is another way to fulfill your dream of studying in Barcelona. This visa grants you a legal stay of 1 year so that you can study whatever you want. Also, like the student visa, it allows you to work! But there is a rule in both cases that we will cover later.

Working and Studying in Barcelona

Yes! You can work while studying in Barcelona with a student visa and a non-profit visa. However, you can only do it under an internship agreement. That is, an agreement between your university or institute, and a company for you to work as an intern.

This rule was established as this agreement does not constitute a contract. Also, there are paid internships, so you can earn some money. But, you must prove that those funds are not intended to cover your maintenance or tuition.

Advice for studying in Barcelona

Here are some tips that you can apply before and during your trip.

  • Find out about scholarships and aids for students. In Barcelona, different organizations offer support to foreign citizens enrolled in undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Open a bank account. Having a debit card and being able to carry out errands with your account will make your stay more comfortable.
  • Share a flat. The cost of living in Barcelona is not very low. So you can save a lot living with another student.
