Visas to Study and Work in Australia

Obtaining a visa is essential for any foreigner to study and work in Australia. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs offers dozens of visas for different purposes. However, our travelers prefer these:

1. Student Visa (subclass 500)

The student visa is the best option for those looking to take courses in Australia and work simultaneously in the country. It can be valid for up to 5 years, corresponding to the duration of the course you enroll in.

With it, you can work part-time (up to 24 hours a week) during the academic period and full-time during holidays. To apply, you need:

  • Be at least 16 years old (or 18 if you want to work).
  • A valid passport at least until the end of your course.
  • International student health insurance, OSHC.
  • Present the Genuine Student Requirement.
  • Prove you have sufficient funds to cover your stay.
  • If you have recently traveled to tropical countries, additional medical tests may be required.
  • Pay the tuition fee partially or fully.

If you decide to try your luck in the Australian job market after starting your studies, you must also meet the following conditions:

  • Obtain a TFN (Tax File Number) if you plan to work as an employee, or an ABN (Australian Business Number) if you work independently.
  • Apply for a White Card, if you work in construction, or a Blue Card for working with children.
  • Open an Australian bank account to receive and make payments without problems.
  • Have a certificate of your English level (recommended).

At GrowPro, we handle your student visa application when you book your experience with us!

2. Visitor Visa (subclass 600)

This is the classic tourist visa. It allows you to travel around the country for up to a year and take a course that lasts no more than a quarter. However, you cannot work.

3. Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462)

The Work and Holiday visa is very popular for working in Australia. You can work for a year for one or two employers. It also allows you to study for four months and work for six.

The downside is that a limited number is granted each year, and it is currently only available for four Spanish-speaking countries: Spain, Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
