You must be clear about this so that you apply for the right visa and meet the right requirements to immigrate, as there are different types of visas. We will talk about this in the following sections.

Requirements for immigrating to Australia for studies

Thanks to Australia’s openness to immigration, thousands of students from all over the world come to live there every year.

If your purpose is to study an academic program in Australia, the first thing you should do is to enroll in a certified Australian institution. Also, before you fly, it is good to make sure that you meet all the requirements to move abroad and study:

  • You must be over 18 years of age if you plan to study and work in Australia.
  • If you are not going to study English in Australia, present a certificate of passing official exams such as IELTS, PTE, Cambridge Advanced or Occupational English exam.
  • Have a certificate of previous studies if you are going to take university studies or technical courses.
  • Write a letter, known as the GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant), stating the reasons why you want to study in Australia.
  • If you have traveled to tropical countries, you will need to undergo certain specific medical tests.

You also need to have an approved student visa. That is a Student Visa.

Student Visa (Subclass 500)

Cost of the visa: 715 AUD.

With a student visa, you are allowed to take any course in Australia lasting from 3 months to 5 years! In addition, you can travel in and out of Australia and work 48 hours bi-weekly. The requirements to apply for a student visa are as follows:

  • Present an official identity document other than your passport.

  • Demonstrate that you have the necessary resources to pay for the course and cover your expenses.
  • Sign the Australian Securities Declaration.
  • Not having had a visa application rejected or canceled.

Requirements to immigrate to Australia for work

Due to the shortage of skilled workers, Australia facilitates immigration for professionals from all over the world who want to migrate to Australia to work.

Undoubtedly, working in Australia offers excellent benefits. To do so, you must be over 18 years old and meet these essential conditions:

  • Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN), a tax identification number. You must have it because the company will need your TFN to cancel the taxes of your work activity.
  • Have the Australian Business Number (ABN), a public identification number. It is not compulsory unless you want to work under the self-employed regime.
  • Have a work visa.

In addition, you will need to open an Australian bank account, as you will be asked to have one to receive your weekly salary. You also need to have a good level of English, some jobs require you to be fluent in the language.

Here are some of the permits you can apply for.

Work and holiday visa (Subclass 462)

The work and holiday visa is another option to study and work in Australia. With this visa, you can get a full-time job, enroll in a 4-month course, and travel as many times as you want in and out of the cities of Australia.

Unlike the student visa, its duration is 1 year, but you can renew it 2 times in a row. To apply for the first time, you must be between 18 and 30 years of age and meet these requirements to immigrate to Australia:

  • Be a citizen or born in one of the countries eligible for Work and Holiday.
  • Scan and send an image of the first page of your passport showing your photo, your name and the expiration date of the document.
  • Have completed tertiary studies or 2 years of a university degree.

Working and holiday visa (Subclass 417)

The work and holiday visa and the working holiday visa allow you to do the same. The difference is that the requirements are a little more flexible and it is only available for some countries in North America and Europe except Spain. In addition, you do not need to certify your level of English.

Temporary Work visa (subclass 400)

If your objective is to immigrate to Australia to work for some time, you need a Temporary Work visa to live in the country for 6 months.

The main requirement is to have skills, experience, or knowledge highly demanded career by the country and to meet these demands:

  1. To be able to support yourself and your family members during their stay in the country.
  2. Not working in the Australian entertainment industry.
  3. Be a genuine visitor and prove that your stay is temporary.
  4. Only perform the work for which you were granted the visa.
  5. Do not have a canceled visa or a rejected application.

Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)

The Temporary Skill Shortage visa is designed to meet the demand for skilled labor in Australia.

In other words, if you are a professional in your country and there is no Australian citizen who can do the job, you can obtain this visa to immigrate to Australia.

At the outset, we warn you that obtaining approval for this visa is complicated. These are some of the requirements you must meet:

  • Be nominated by a certified sponsor.
  • Work exclusively for your employer.
  • Have skills and qualifications related to your occupation.
  • Have a positive skills assessment.
  • Having worked in the nominated occupation or related field for at least 2 years.
  • Meet certain minimum standards of English proficiency.
  • Do not violate the “visa sponsorship payment” laws.

Although the requirements are cumbersome, this visa offers multiple benefits. For example, reside in Australia for 2 to 4 years, study and, if you meet the conditions, apply for permanent residency over time.

Requirements to immigrate to Australia and obtain permanent residence

Australia has immigration processes that allow you to become a resident. To apply for permanent residency, you must make sure you meet other requirements. These are more demanding, but the opportunities offered by living in Australia make it worthwhile to meet them. These are:

  • Be less than 45 years old.
  • Have a proficient level of English.
  • You have been invited to apply for a Skilled Independent visa or a Skilled nominated visa.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

With this visa, you can stay permanently in Australia. It also allows you to work and study anywhere in the country, sponsor family members to apply for residency, and eventually become an Australian citizen.

The requirements to obtain it are explained below:

  • Drafting a letter of interest (EOI) using the SkillSelect.
  • Receive an invitation from the government to participate in the program.
  • Answer a form and obtain a passing grade of at least 65 points. Otherwise, you will not be eligible.
  • Have a profession that appears on the list of qualified skills of the visa subclass 189.

Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190)

The subclass 190 allows you to do the same things as the Skilled independent visa and the application requirements are the same.

The only difference is that, if you wish to obtain the Skilled Nominated visa, you must also be nominated by an Australian employer.
